China's entry policies depend on your nationality, passport, travel dates and itinerary. There are several ways eligible international travelers can visit China, including visa-free entry.

Three ways to enter China

1. 30-DAY VISA-FREE ENTRY

For travelers from eligible countries, China offers visa-free entry for qualifying short visits, including tourism.

Under the published unilateral exemption policy, eligible ordinary passport holders can stay for up to 30 days. The permitted stay is counted from midnight following the day of entry.

2. 240-HOUR VISA-FREE TRANSIT

Planning to visit China on your way to another country or region? You may qualify for China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy.

As of August 2026, the policy covers nationals of 57 countries and permits eligible travelers to stay for up to 10 days in designated areas, entering through one of 65 approved ports. Travelers must meet the passport, onward-ticket and other eligibility requirements.

3. APPLY FOR A CHINESE TOURIST VISA

If you don't qualify for visa-free entry, or you want to stay longer than the visa-free period, you may need to apply for a Chinese tourist visa, commonly called an L visa.

The application process and supporting documents depend on the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application center serving your place of residence.

Typical requirements include a valid passport, application form, photograph and relevant supporting travel documents. Some visa centers specify at least 6 months of remaining passport validity and two blank visa pages.

Perseronal Suggestion From Himmy

If you have the option, I personally recommend getting a visa.

Visa-free travel has made visiting China much easier, and it can be a great option for many travelers.

But if you're planning a bigger trip, want to stay longer, or simply want more flexibility while you're here, I personally prefer traveling with a proper visa when possible.

China is a huge country. Sometimes you arrive with one plan and discover somewhere else you want to explore. Having the appropriate visa can give you more freedom to adjust your itinerary without having to build your trip around the restrictions of a particular visa-free policy.

My advice?

Don't think only about getting into China.

Think about how you want to experience China once you're here.

If a visa makes sense for your situation, the extra preparation may be worth it for the flexibility and peace of mind it can provide.

***This is my personal travel suggestion, not immigration or legal advice. Visa requirements and visa-free eligibility depend on your nationality, passport, travel purpose, itinerary, and current Chinese entry policies. Always check the latest official requirements before traveling.***

VISA Frequently Asked Questions

Can HimmyWonders arrange my Chinese visa?
We can help you understand the general process and point you toward official information, but we do not issue visas or guarantee visa approvals. You remain responsible for obtaining any required travel documents.

Can I join the trip without a visa?
Possibly. This depends on your passport, the entry policy in force on your travel dates and, for visa-free transit, your flight itinerary. Check the applicable official requirements before traveling.

Is 240-hour visa-free transit the same as 30-day visa-free entry?
No. They are separate policies with different nationality, travel-route and entry conditions. You should verify which, if either, applies to you.

Should I book flights before applying for a visa?
Check the instructions from the Chinese visa center or consulate responsible for your application. Required travel evidence and application procedures can differ by location.

What if entry policies change before my trip?
Check the latest official information before departure. HimmyWonders can share relevant updates, but traveler must confirm their own eligibility with the appropriate authorities.
